In My View: We are all up to the test

The Omicron variant is the latest twist in the pandemic saga and has put the "return to normal" on hold and instantly had a detrimental effect upon the stock markets. Inflation is above predicted levels and the BBC report that a typical family of two adults and two children will need to spend an additional £1,700 per annum on basic household goods. Clearly, this is a challenging business environment but there are signs that all

    In My View: Sarah Williams

This is my first piece for the Observer. I was thinking about what idea I could offer to the business community of Chichester to get the collective brains whirring......then I stumbled on a quote from Jack Welch, recognised as one of the great business thought leaders of his generation "Someone, somewhere has a better idea." ~ Jack Welch. This sparked a train of thought around how many incredible ideas and innovations there are every

In My View: There has never been a better time to take on an apprentice.

2021 continues to be a challenging year for many local businesses, with coronavirus hitting Sussex especially hard due to the impact on Gatwick Airport and its associated supply chain. The effects of Brexit are also affecting businesses, often creating issues with the recruitment and retention of staff in many sectors in the region. Earlier this year Rishi Sunak, Chancellor of the Exchequer, announced a package of measures to support jobs in

In My View: It takes time, money and effort to get a customer so why take them for granted?

Any business will rightly state that customers are the lifeblood of their business. Yet many businesses apparently lose focus on the need to maintain great customer care. When did you last review your onboarding process for new customers? We all know you don't get a second chance to make a first impression so why leave anything to chance? Account management should not be an afterthought of winning the sale

In My View: Four Steps to a Successful Profitability Analysis

Are you uncertain about the level of success you achieved? A profitability analysis can provide insights into how a business is run, it relates revenue to costs. Maybe some clients require too much time for the money. Perhaps there are other opportunities around the corner that you can jump on. Either way, it should be on your list of tasks if you want to ensure long-term business growth. And here's

In my view… Making Tax Digital for VAT: Updated Guidance

Making Tax Digital for VAT requires VAT registered businesses with taxable turnover above the VAT registration threshold to keep records in digital form and file their VAT Returns using software. Who must comply with MTD? If your business is currently registered for VAT and its turnover is over the registration threshold of £85,000 then from 1April 2019 you are required to maintain electronic accounting records and file VAT returns using compliant software.

In my view… Your people are your PR ambassadors

I recently presented a 'tongue in cheek' review of 7 Epic HR Failures at the Chamber's Business Breakfast and it got me thinking about how HR and PR are so closely aligned. I chose examples of big brands that had hit the headlines over the past few years. You may remember "BBC still failing women over equal pay" and Byron Hamburgers with their alleged 'fake staff meeting'

    In my view… Dementia

Dementia is an increasingly hot topic of conversation and with advances in medical science continuing unabated, coupled with the promotion of healthier lifestyles, average life expectancy is likely to keep on rising. I was particularly touched by the recently reported story of Dean Smith, the manager of Aston Villa FC, who explained that his father, Ron, a lifelong Villa fan and former steward at the club has no idea that his son is

    Towards a multi-purpose town centre

Once protected by our privileged position, Chichester's shopping streets are now showing signs of the changes that have been sweeping the world since the arrival of the smart phone. Shops are finding it difficult to make ends meet as consumers abandon bricks and mortar but rents and government taxation levels fail to take into account the resulting fall in their revenues. Business Improvement Districts (BIDs) have become the fashionable option for local

In my view... The Challenge Ahead

As I write these few words I am about to embark on an exciting (and somewhat daunting) new challenge as CEO of the Chamber. It is always hard to follow in the footsteps of one's predecessors and in this case I have not one, but two pairs of shoes, to fill. So, we bid a fond and grateful farewell to Julie Harrison and Sue Garman who have skillfully led the Chamber over the last
