Behind the Scenes - Chichester Cathedral
Join us for a fascinating glimpse into life behind the scenes at the Cathedral. We will see the song school where the cathedral choir practises every day. Dating from the 15th century it was once the Chapter House where the Canons met daily to discuss business matters. See the secret Chamber where the cathedral silver was hidden during the Civil War. The cathedral library, which we will also visit, lost many of its treasured books at the hands of the Parliamentarians in the 1640's but the collection has been rebuilt to include an early edition Chaucer and a book containing the signature of poet John Donne. Lastly we will have the opportunity to visit the Bishop's Chapel, the private chapel of the bishop which has been in regular use by successive bishops. It has changed little since it was rebuilt in the 13th century and has a lovely peaceful atmosphere.
Please note that both the song school and the library are approached by winding/spiral staircases of about 40 steps.
Meet the other participants in the Cloisters Cafe where you will be served coffee and biscuits before we begin our tour.
