In My View: There has never been a better time to take on an apprentice.

2021 continues to be a challenging year for many local businesses, with coronavirus hitting Sussex especially hard due to the impact on Gatwick Airport and its associated supply chain. The effects of Brexit are also affecting businesses, often creating issues with the recruitment and retention of staff in many sectors in the region.


Earlier this year Rishi Sunak, Chancellor of the Exchequer, announced a package of measures to support jobs in every part of the country. This is intended to give businesses of all sizes and industries the confidence to retain, retrain and hire, and provide people with the tools they need to get better jobs. The package of support was wide-ranging and included Kickstart (a Government scheme to support young people at risk of long-term unemployment) as well as support for businesses to hire apprentices.

Igniting Apprenticeships

The Government's Apprentice Incentive Scheme is designed to reward employers when employing apprentices to their business with financial grants of up to £4,000. Many businesses have had to adapt over the last 18 months and these grants are designed to support business owners to take steps to offer employment opportunities, while also helping to grow the business, workforce and receive financial gain for doing so. The additional incentive grants are only available until the end of September 2021.

For businesses that are reopening and potentially looking at a surge in business, apprenticeships have never been a more affordable option to recruit new talent or up-skill existing talent. There are also many other reasons to take on an apprentice - going beyond financial benefits:

1.Improving productivity - More than three-quarters 76% of employers who employ apprentices agree they make their workplace more productive.

2.Developing staff across all levels of your business - Apprenticeships are also an effective way to up-skill your existing workforce

3.Aiding staff retention - Employing an apprentice can aid staff retention, providing you with skills staff for the future. In a recent survey, 74% of companies surveyed said that apprentices tended to be more loyal than non-apprentices.
